Is ChatGPT the new “Google killer”?

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm with its extraordinary natural language processing (NLP) capabilities and crisp responses, promising a major technological revolution. Without notice, the narrative moved towards ChatGPT vs. Google, as the intelligent and chatty chatbot from OpenAI has slowly gained more notoriety as the “would-be Google killer.”

People love ChatGPT’s ability to build a natural dialogue and provide detailed responses to complex questions instantly. This feature helped the AI tool attract unprecedented attention, gaining 1 million users in its first week on the market.

So, can we finally say goodbye to digging through multiple websites to find what we’re looking for? Will Chat GPT replace search-based queries with conversational responses, replacing Google altogether? Let’s find out with a side-by-side comparison of these two platforms.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot trained over the latest GPT 3.5 model or the Generative Pre-Trained Transformer — the OpenAI’s Generative Text Artificial Intelligence model. In short, ChatGPT exploits deep NLP and machine-learning techniques to process language and provide human-like responses.

ChatGPT’s talent to interact and respond in a conversational tone won users overnight. Give it text prompts, and it instantly answers back, providing a human-like response to the query. Moreover, it can write poetry, screenplay, story, scientific essays, and even code snippets.

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT utilizes the GPT-3.5 modules trained on vast internet data using Azure AI supercomputers. In addition, OpenAI employs a unique Reinforcement Learning technique that incorporates human feedback to train the model further. It means that human trainers contribute to the training of ChatGPT, in addition to a massive data set.

The ChatGPT system is designed to produce contextually appropriate responses and prioritize ease of use, promptly answering inquiries, admitting mistakes, and declining inappropriate requests.

Advantages and Limitations of ChatGPT Compared to Google

As ChatGPT is causing disruption, let’s start with its capabilities and disadvantages.

ChatGPT Advantages:

  • Human-like responses. The interaction with ChatGPT is similar to talking to an expert. Ask the bot to explain the second law of thermodynamics in simple terms, and the answer provided will be concise and structured.
  • Precise and concise answers. The information provided by ChatGPT includes all the necessary details without any excess.
  • Basic coding skills. Searching for code snippets is one thing, but having the ability to write the code itself is a whole different level. When asked to correct a python code that adds two numbers, ChatGPT not only fixed the code but also explained the error. This level of knowledge is awe-inspiring and not available on Google.
  • Virtual Assistant (VA) skills. Chat GPT can draft contracts, compose poetry, create travel itineraries, and suggest gift ideas — areas where it surpasses Google.
  • Customized responses. ChatGPT understands context and adjusts its answers accordingly, thanks to its ability to process variations in the text prompts.

ChatGPT Limitations:

  • Outdated sources. ChatGPT relies on data up to 2021, meaning it lacks knowledge of events or information beyond that. Therefore, its accuracy needs to be improved.
  • Offline existence. The bot can’t access the internet. Thus, its knowledge is limited to the information accessible during the training process. This detail adds to the issue of the need for more variation in some responses due to no knowledge of current events.
  • Cost per response. Developing and maintaining a technology of ChatGPT’s caliber requires significant resources — the average cost per chat is currently in “single digit cents.” Talking to ChatGPT is free now, but its creators will likely implement a monetization strategy

How does Google work?

Google scans the internet for URLs (a process known as crawling) and indexes the data in its database to retrieve it quickly when prompted. Lastly, it presents the most relevant information based on multiple criteria.

Google ranks websites based on the relevance of their content to a specific keyword. When a user enters a query, Google compares it to billions of web pages and displays results in order of relevance.

Advantages and Limitations of Google Compared to ChatGPT

Google has established itself as a leader in the www. universe. Is it still the best in class when compared to ChatGPT? Let’s go over some of its pros and cons.

Google Advantages:

  • Up-to-date sources. Google gathers information from a vast and continuously growing database with over one hundred billion web pages indexed. Thanks to it, the search engine can provide the most relevant results in seconds.
  • Multiple sources. Users get numerous points of view to find the most appropriate answer to each query. You dont get a simple yes or no response, as the websites are listed by relevance, providing results deemed most relevant to the search query and allowing users to compare and verify information through multiple avenues.
  • Real-time information. The search engine provides accurate information on train and flight schedules, delays, fastest routes, and live traffic updates.
  • Personalization. Google provides tailored search results based on past choices, location, preferences, and more. For example, when searching for gift ideas, Google provides details along with user reviews, the best websites to purchase, the nearest store availability, and many other suggestions based on the user’s choice, thus providing more comprehensive answers than ChatGPT.

Google Disadvantages:

  • Advertising. Google is free of charge for users because its primary source of revenue is advertising users pay for the accuracy of each response with their data.
  • No language processing abilities. The search engine cant engage in human-like interactions. It presents multiple results for a query, but the user must determine the most accurate answer alone.
  • No VA capabilities. Google can provide information on how to write a good story, including elements needed to make it engaging, but you still need to do the actual writing.

ChatGPT vs. Google: User-Friendliness

ChatGPT is all about ease of use — you provide a text prompt, and the bot offers a clear and comprehensive answer. Things like writing or debugging code are relatively simple with ChatGPT, which also explains the process for further clarification.

In contrast, Google retrieves results, leaving it to the user to visit the ranked web pages and search for the information they need. Google has a feature called “featured snippets,” which directly answers questions but includes fewer details than a ChatGPT response.

Therefore, in terms of ease of use, ChatGPT stands out. If it gains the capability to access the internet, it could revolutionize online search.

ChatGPT vs. Google: Precision

Many have expressed concerns about ChatGPT’s accuracy since its release. Social media has seen numerous examples of inaccurate responses. While ChatGPT can precisely handle simple queries, it struggles with more complex or unusual questions. In some instances, ChatGPT confidently provided an incorrect answer.

When I asked ChatGPT the question, “Which is more accurate: ChatGPT or Google?” it provided a balanced response that weighed the strengths and weaknesses of both platforms.

But it’s worth noting that ChatGPT acknowledges the possibility of providing incorrect responses. While it may seem like a minor issue, it carries significant implications. Users who doubt ChatGPT’s accuracy must verify the information from other sources, which can be time-consuming.

On the other hand, Google employs complex algorithms to index and rank web pages, providing accurate and relevant results. Moreover, it presents multiple results for a query and leaves it to the user to determine the most pertinent information.

In terms of precision, Google is far superior to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT vs. Google: My Verdict

ChatGPT has strong points, such as its ability to provide clear and concise answers to complex questions and its focus on ease of use. However, its limitations, such as questionable accuracy and lack of knowledge about current events, make it less reliable than Google.

On the other hand, Google’s more extensive database offers varied, personalized search results and real-time information.

We should remember, though, that ChatGPT is still in its infancy. The AI-powered bot can potentially improve and challenge Google’s dominance in the future. It’ll not replace Google entirely in the short term, but it does provide an alternative to text-based searches.
