It’s time to implement a SEO-friendly URL Structure!

Today, we talk about your website structure, URLs, and their role in SEO. How you organize information on your pages sends a suggestive message to both website visitors and search engines, so it’s wise to aim for a uniform structure of your website.

Translation: URLs reflect how you’ve organized your site, so if they’re long and tangled, it’s a sign that your website lacks organization. Which is rarely compatible with positive user experience and excellent SEO results.

We’ll use an example to help you understand better why this step matters. Take a look at the following URL: https://www.ibm.com/cloud/watson-visual-recognition/pricing.

The good news is that most CMS platforms are designed to do the hard work for you. However, the more you pay attention and curate these details, the higher your chances of improving SEO. So, your job for today is to take a look at your website’s structure and make sure every folder and subfolder is in the right place so that you can create a logical click path for every page.

Ideally, you want to keep URLs structure short–no more than four directory levels. This way, crawlers, and website visitors don’t get lost in too many pages (the faster crawlers can reach URLs, the higher the number of pages they capture and index).

If you are using different languages on your website, the URLs should be localized, meaning the EN URL www.inc.com/EN/products/ should read www.inc.com/FR/produits for the French market etc.

If you have changed any URLs today, don’t forget to set 301 redirects from the old to the new URL!
